Narayanganj five-murder case: Lone convict sentenced to death

A court in Narayanganj on Monday sentenced a young man to death in a case filed in connection with the murder of five members of a family centring extramarital affair at Baburail in Narayanganj city in January 2016.

The court also fined the lone convict, Mahfuzur Rahman, Tk 5,000.

According to prosecution, Taslima Begum, 35, wife of Shafiqul Islam, a car driver in Dhaka, their children Sumaiya, 5, Shantu, 10, Taslima’s brother Morshedul, 22, and Lamia Akhter, 25, who was married to Shafiqul’s brother Sharif, were found dead in their house on January 16.

Shafiqul Islam filed the case against unidentified miscreants with Narayanganj Sadar police station on January 17.

Police arrested Mahfuz, nephew of Shafiqul and showed him arrested in the case on January 18.

Later, Mahfuz gave statement confessing that he killed the five persons all alone.

On April 7, police pressed a charge sheet against Mahfuz in connection with the killing.

He murdered all the victims including his aunts and children by turn. Mahfuz, the lone killer, was involved in the killing to take revenge of being rebuked as he had an illicit relation with his aunt Lamia Akhter, wife of Shafiqul’s brother.

After examining all records and 23 witnesses, district and sessions judge Hosne Ara Akhter handed down the verdict.
