Nancy joins politics

Nancy as politicianFrom now on popular singer Nancy will not only thrill the cultural stage, but also the political stage.

She on Thursday afternoon was elected the vice-president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-backed cultural organisation Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangatha (Jasas) [Nationalist Social Cultural Organisation]. The artiste in the afternoon confirmed the news to Prothom Alo.

Nancy said, “I’ve fascination to nationalist ideologies since long. My mother was a Jasas person. BNP’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman’s political ideas have attracted me. It’s true that I wasn’t eager to join politics so early as I tried to establish first, then step to the political stage.”

The singer said, “I think as an artiste I’m for all. It’s the audience that drew me here. It doesn’t mean that being a singer I’ve no personal view.”

Nancy had to face serious backlash from the government several months ago for her facebook status. Referring to the blow, she said, “Like any other citizen I’ve my political ideology. From that very point, I expressed my personal opinion as I was very disappointed by the government’s activities. Following that comment, a certain group started harassing me and at one point they exceeded their limit.”

The artiste said her comment on social media brought a grave turmoil in her professional life. She said, “My professional life became tough after the comment on facebook. Without any particular reason, my stage-shows were being cancelled. It took me to severe depression. I got to know that the shows were cancelled as I’m a fan of BNP. I’ve tried my hard to convince them that an individual Nancy should not be compared to a political one. If I can’t sing that’s another issue.”

She added, “It’s not right that I should be subjected to harassment for my political affinity. Finally I decided to join politics as I’ve already defamed for my political affiliations and I thought if I picked up a post then I’d get rid of ill-reputes. I never bowed down to any threat. I know there are numerous young persons in this country who are not happy with what the government is doing. I was stuck to my decision and joined politics. I think, this will, at least, encourage my fans.”
