A hijab-wearing Muslim woman was escorted out of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign rally by police on Friday.
Rose Hamid, a 56-year-old flight attendant, was staging a silent protest against the Republican’s controversial comments on Syrian refugees at a campaign event in South Carolina.
CNN reported that Hamid, who was sitting in the stands directly behind Trump, stood up when the Republican front-runner suggested that Syrian refugees fleeing war in Syria were affiliated to ISIS.
Trump drew flak earlier for calling for a ban on Muslims entering the US.
Despite her silence, Republican’s supporters around her began loudly chanting Trump’s name, and pointing at her and at Marty Rosenbluth who was beside her and who had stood up as well.
They booed the two and asked them to get out. As they were escorted out one of them even shouted “You have a bomb, you have a bomb,” according to Hamid.
“The ugliness really came out fast and that’s really scary,” Hamid told CNN in a phone interview after she was forced out of the event.
“Salam, I come in peace,” was written on the shirt Hamid was wearing with her hijab.
“I figured that most Trump supporters have probably never met a Muslim, so I thought I’d give them the opportunity to meet one,” she had told CNN before the event.
“I really don’t plan to say anything. I don’t want to be disrespectful, but if he says something that I feel needs answering, I might — we’ll just see what strikes me.”
Hamid was part of a group of people who wanted to silently protest Trump’s anti-Muslim proposals
Police justified their action of expelling Hamid by saying they were told beforehand by the campaign to throw out any ‘troublemaker’
