“We will be left with no other option but to launch a movement if dialogues are not held to resolve the crisis. The 18-Party alliance will start a vigorous agitation to oust the government after Eid [Eid-ul-Azha],” party Vice-Chairman Abdullah Al Noman told reporters on Friday.

He came out with the threat after presiding over a meeting of the opposition coalition’s Secretaries General at the BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters in Dhaka in the morning.

The fresh programmes to garner support for the opposition’s demand for a nonpartisan poll-time government would begin on Sunday with a rally at Narsinghdi district.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia would address it, which would be followed by seven more rallies in seven different districts as a part of the movement.

Noman on Friday said, “Any dialogue on the caretaker government should be meaningful otherwise BNP will not take part in it. We want to tell the government that there is still time to reinstate the caretaker government provision in the Constitution to end the political crisis.”

The opposition has been on the streets to restore the caretaker government system since it was annulled in June, 2011.

But ruling Awami League is rooting for the incumbent government to hold the upcoming 10th national election in accordance with the provision of the Constitution.

Noman said, “The government has turned the Constitution into a partisan one through various amendments it managed to pass in the Parliament due to its majority. It has also made the administration partisan. Under the circumstances, no free and fair election is possible under such administration.”

Regarding the Narsinghdi rally, Noman, who is also the convenor of the committee for the rally’s preparation, said, “We hope the Narsinghdi rally would be a big one. All preparations are complete. The leader of the opposition will make an important speech at the rally.”

He said the rally would begin at 2pm Sunday. Khaleda Zia would start for Narsinghdi from her Gulshan residence at 1pm.
