Mobile banking services are becoming increasingly popular among Bangladesh’s 100 million cell phone users.

The number of clients registered for online banking is increasing by 10 percent every month, according to Bangladesh Bank’s statistics. Transactions over mobile phones are increasing by 12 percent.

Dashgupta Ashim Kumar, Executive Director for Payment Systems Division of Bangladesh Bank, told bdnews24.com, “A large portion of the country’s population is still beyond banking services. It is now possible to provide services to them over the phone. The banks are taking this opportunity.”

Mobile banking is now utilised to clear dues of various hotels, shopping centres and chain shops. Money is being transferred to every part of the country through cell phones.

On average, 5,00,000 clients transact Tk 1.4 billion through their mobile phones every day.

There were around 66,00,224 people registered for mobile banking until June. It was around 60,00,000 in May.

There are 99,582 agencies dealing with mobile banking in the country.

Dutch-Bangla Bank introduced the service in March 2011. Now a total of 18 banks are offering their services over phone.

The central bank officials say Tk 42.6 billion has been transacted through mobile banking ever since the service was first launched.
