Momtaz sings on Bangabandhu in parliament

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, who was chairing the sitting, gave Momtaz 10 minutes to deliver her speech as the House resumed after the Asr prayers recess

Parliament yesterday saw an unusual session as singer-turned-lawmaker Momtaz Begum enthralled the House with her songs in the middle of her speech on the 2014-15 budget discussion in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, who was chairing the sitting, gave Momtaz 10 minutes to deliver her speech as the House resumed after the Asr prayers recess.

Momtaz used to sing a song after each of her speeches in the ninth parliament to which she had been elected an MP in the reserved seats. She sang twice yesterday.

At the beginning of her speech, the Awami League MP turned a famous poem on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman into a song.

Then Momtaz spoke on the development activities in her constituency Singair in Manikganj.

As her stipulated time was running out, Momtaz began to sing another song hailing Sheikh Hasina, saying people can brag about the Liberation War only because of Hasina and without her they cannot do so.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury extended the time so that Momtaz could finish the song.

As soon as Momtaz stopped her speech, the attending MPs appreciated her by thumbing desks.

While delivering speech, another female MP Fazilatunnesa Bappy too started her budget speech with the recitation of a poem on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
