MKA claims arrest, police deny

In this December 9 photo, “Chhatra League activists” beat and hack a youth named Bishwajit, mistaking him for an opposition supporter in front of Victoria Park in Old Dhaka. Bishwajit died of his injuries later.

While police kept denying, Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir on Tuesday claimed that eight people have been arrested so far in connection with the killing of Bishwajit Das.

A group of 10 to 12 Bangladesh Chhatra League activists hacked to death Bishwajit near Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka on his way to work during the 18-party called countrywide road blockade on Sunday.

Bishwajit, 24, died after he was taken to Mitford Hospital for treatment.

The law enforcers identified the people who were involved with the killing, Muhiuddin said this during a discussion meeting organised by Digital Bangladesh Forum at Dhaka Reporters Unity.

The minister however, did not reveal the identities of the arrestees.

On the other hand, Monirul Islam, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of police, claimed that police have identified six people in connection with the killing but denied report of arrests.

“The identification was made after scrutinising the video footages and talking to the local people,” Monirul told journalists at the DB office.

The home minister also claimed that the people involved with the killing do not belong to the Bangladesh Chhatra League.

They were ousted from the BCL, Mohiuddin claimed.

He also claimed that Bishwajit was a BCL activist.
