Detectives arrested BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Monday evening in the city a day after he was sued for Sunday’s violence.

A team of Detective Branch of Police that was part of the law enforcers who kept the BNP head office cordoned off since Monday morning picked up Fakhrul while emerging from the Nayapaltan office around 6:00pm.

A case was filed Sunday evening against 200 to 250 unnamed people, except for Mirza Fakhrul, for their alleged involvement in Sunday’s violence during the BNP-led 18-party alliance’s countrywide road blockade.

One “Ainal” filed the case with Paltan Police Station around 8:20pm Sunday, Sheikh Mohammad Zubayer Mokki, a sub-inspector of the police station told The Daily Star on Monday.

BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was also made accused in the case which was filed under Explosive Substances Act.

The BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced an eight-hour road blockade across the country on Sunday demanding restoration of the caretaker government system.

During the blockade, at least two people were killed and 290 injured and 50 vehicles were torched and 150 more vandalised.
