Ministers are afraid of Tarique Rahman, says acting BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“We can gather from the remarks of ministers that they are afraid of the party’s senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman. The government has failed to prove any charges against him. That’s why they are carrying on propaganda (against him),” he told a discussion at the National Press Club on Sunday.
Tarique, the elder son of BNP chief Khaleda Zia, has been living in London for over five years now.
At a meeting in London on Mar 26 this year he claimed that his father, Ziaur Rahman, was Bangladesh’s first president.
In less than two weeks, Tarique alleged Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was an ‘illegal prime minister’.
He also claimed Bangabandhu was a failed leader, while his father was a successful one.
Ruling Awami League leaders reacted sharply to his comments. Some said Tarique needed a brain check-up.
Fakhrul asked the government to resign. “I would like to tell the government to resign and hand over power to a non-party government. Or else, you will be responsible for any dire situation (that may arise).”
He said 310 people were killed and 32 were made to disappear across the country in two months since the Jan 5 polls.
The BNP leader said the government was suppressing the human rights organisations.
He said NGOs like Odhikar, Transparency International, Bangladesh and Sushanoer Jonno Nagorik, were being harassed for telling the truth.
