Mind your business, monitor irregularities in UZ polls: BNP to EC

In a note of warning, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed on Wednesday said the Election Commission will be held responsible in case of any irregularity in the remaining phases of the countrywide upazila elections.

“The government is illegal, but the Election Commission is not. So, it must shoulder the responsibility in case of further anomalies in the coming upazila elections,” he said.

The BNP leader issued the warning while addressing a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

He said the Election Commission is in fake sleeping. “They (EC) are implementing the agenda of the illegal government.”

Rizvi alleged that the opposition-backed candidates and their supporters are being harassed and repressed at different parts of the country.

The ruling party candidates are unleashing terror in different areas, including Netrakona Sadar, Horinakunda of Jhenidah, Sharaitpur Sadar, Motbaria and Bhandarai of Pirojpur to intimidate the voters and manipulate polls, he added.

The BNP leader deplored that the EC is inactive and silent when the ruling party men are blatantly breaching the election code of conduct. “We don’t get any remedy even after lodging complaint with it.”

Criticising the Chief Election Commissioner’s tour abroad during the countrywide upazila elections, he said it has proved that the commission is showing negligence to the upazila elections. “It cares little about people and their opinions.”

He also warned the commission that people will give it a befitting reply if it tries to play a dirty game over the election again.
