Leave Ramna Park by 5pm: police

Two days ahead of the Bengali New Year, police have requested everyone to conclude their Pahela Baishakh celebrations at the Ramna Park by 5pm on Sunday.

At a media call on Friday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed suggested everyone to leave the park by the time.

A deadly bomb attack was carried out at the Ramna Batmul during Pahela Boishakh celebrations in 2001, which had killed 10 people and injured many others.

“However, people can stay at the Shuhrawardy Uddyan until 7pm,” Ahmed told the media briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road.

The DMP Commissioner assured everyone that the law keepers had taken adequate security measures.

Bangladesh is getting ready to welcome Pahela Boishakh of 1420, the Bengeli New Year. Like previous occasions, the celebrations will begin with presentations by the Chhayanat. Students of the Dhaka University’s Fine Arts Faculty will bring out a procession, ‘Mangal Shobhajatra’, on the campus.

Commissioner Ahmed said they would set up road blocks and search points at 22 locations in the capital Dhaka.

Ramna zone police Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sarder issued directives for traffic in the area.
