Khaleda Zia’s lawyers held their first meeting with her after a special court in Dhaka issued arrest warrant for her 20 days ago in two graft cases.
Witnesses said former attorney general AJ Mohammad Ali and senior lawyer Nitai Roy Chowdhury entered the BNP chief’s office at Gulshan on Tuesday afternoon with police permission.
They got out of the office around 8pm.
Dhaka Metropolitan Special Court-3 issued the arrest warrants on Feb 18 in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases after Khaleda skipped several hearings.
According to witnesses, police first obstructed the two lawyers from entering the office when they reached there around 5:30pm.
They, however, allowed them in after sometime.
Nitai Roy told reporters waiting outside Khaleda’s office: “As (Khaleda’s) lawyers, we discussed with her different legal aspects of the cases.”
“We also had discussions about hearing on the cases pending at the High Court. We didn’t discuss anything beyond those cases,” he added.
Asked if the BNP chief would appear before the trial court in the next date, Nitai Roy said: “You will see the developments in time.”
To a question, he said Khaleda was well and in good spirits.
The Anti Corruption Commission had prosecuted Khaleda, her eldest son Tarique Rahman and several others for embezzlement of around 52.5 million from the two trusts.
Mohammad Ali is a member of Khaleda’s advisory council while Nitai is BNP’s legal affairs assistant secretary.
