The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday voiced concern over incidents of recent abduction and enforced disappearance.

“According to the information came up in the media, a total of 52 people were either abducted or made to disappear in six months from January to June this year,” said a press release of the commission.

“In the last six days, two businessmen and a bank officer were abducted by detective impersonators. Such one after another abduction is condemnable,” it added.

The press release said a commission meeting with its chairman in the chair today, Tuesday, discussed the allegations of abduction and enforced disappearance and voiced concern.

The commission has already taken suo moto cognisance of several incidents of abduction and enforced disappearance, it said.

The commission has seriously taken cognisance of disappearance of Belarus honorary consul and businessman Aniruddha Kumar Roy and asked the secretary at Public Safety Division of the home ministry to file a report after investigating the matter properly.

Abduction and enforced disappearance is a brazen violation of human rights, said the NHRC chairman, Kazi Reazul Hoque.

“It’s the duty of the state to ensure security of its citizens. If law enforcers get involved in such incidents, it can in no way be acceptable. It’ll ruin the state’s image.”
