Former minister Abdul Latif Siddique on Sunday told the Election Commission that he would resign from Jatiya Sangsad and would not continue legal procedure to sustain parliament membership.
He made the comment coming out of a hearing at the Election Commission secretariat over the legality of his parliament membership after Awami League had expelled him from the party.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad and other election commissioners were present at the hearing. Awami League office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap represented the party general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam.
Earlier in the morning, the Appellate Division rejected an appeal of former minister Abdul Latif Siddique against a higher court rule that rejected his writ petition challenging the Election Commission’s authority to call him to hearing over legality of his Jatiya Sangsad membership.
The Appellate Division asked the former minister to attend the hearing scheduled for 11:00am at the Election Commission.
Latif on August 16 filed the writ seeking stay on the functioning of the Election Commission’s letter asking him to attend a hearing over his membership of parliament. It also sought an order to explain the commission why the issuance of such letter would not be declared illegal.
A high court bench comprising Justice Md Emdadul Huq and Justice Muhammad Khushid Alam Sarkar had rejected writ on Thursday.
