Latif issue: Islamic parties threaten to call hartal

The minister’s comments on hajj have sparked controversy both at home and abroad

The Islamic parties have warned of enforcing a nationwide shutdown, if the government does not arrest Posts and Telecommunications Minister Abdul Latif Siddique for his comment on hajj.

Condemning the “controversial” remarks of the minister, the parties also announced a protest programme for Friday.

The Secretary General of the alliance, Maulana Zafrullah Khan, second-in-command of  Bangladesh Khelafat Andolon, announced the protest programme at a press conference held in the National Press Club in the capital around 3:30pm.

He said: “We will observe a nationwide general strike on October 26, if the government does not arrest Latif Siddique.”

Earlier on Sunday, the minister made derogatory comments on hajj while addressing a reception arranged by the Tangail expatriates in New York.

According to reports from several private TV channels, the government has decided to remove Posts and Telecommunications Minister Abdul Latif Siddique from the cabinet.

Amid harsh criticism on recent comments on hajj Posts and Telecommunications Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui said, he was firm in his comments.

Latif is not at all thinking to withdraw his recent comments on hajj, he told the BBC Bangla.

However, he said that he would only withdraw if Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina orders him.
