Last Hope survivor back home

The last survivor from the Bangladeshi vessel, MV Hope, which tilted and partially sank in the Andaman Sea, has returned home.

Second Officer Mohammad Mobarak Hossain reached Dhaka on Friday by a Thai Airways flight.

Mohiuddin Abdul Quader of Interport Maritime Ltd, a representative of the vessel’s owners, said Hossain was sent to Chittagong on another flight.

MV Hope flipped sideways on Jul 4 in rough weather off the Phuket coast. Several among the 17 sailors on board managed to get onto a life boat while the rest put on life jackets and jumped into the sea.

Nine of them were rescued and the bodies of two others recovered. Six are still missing.

Five of those rescued were brought to Chittagong by the German cargo ship, MV Buxmoon, on Jul 7.

Three others also reached home four days later. Bodies of Chief Officer Mahboob Morshed and Chief Engineer Kazi Saifuddin were brought back on Jul 17 after autopsy.

Mobarak Hossain could not return then because he was undergoing treatment at a Thai hospital.

His relatives said he headed to his Agrabad residence soon after he reached Chittagong in the evening.

The six sailors still missing are Captain Rajib Chandra Karmakar, Second Engineer Nezam Uddin, Electrician Sadim Ali, cabin crew Mohammad Nasir, Ali Hossain, and Head Chef Nasir Uddin.
