Khaleda’s polls-time govt formula impractical: Obaidul

Terming ‘impractical’ the Opposition Leader and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s proposal for the polls-time government, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said she placed the formula without doing any homework.

“The opposition leader didn’t do necessary homework before coming up with the proposal. So, her proposal is incomplete. A complete formula would have come if she did the homework,” he said.

The minister was talking to reporters after inaugurating several culverts and bridges on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the city’s City Gate area in the morning.

The BNP chairperson on Monday offered an alternative formula to form a polls-time government, led by a revered person, comprising 10 former advisers from the 1996 and 2001 caretaker governments to be chosen by the ruling and opposition parties to hold an inclusive and credible election.

Obaidul said as far as he knows four of the advisers of the two caretaker governments have already died while three are not physically well and six others are not agreed to perform duties. “So, her (Khaleda’s) proposal is impractical.”

Observing that the US and UK as well as the country’s distinguished personalities welcomed the proposal of the Prime Minister as positive, he said they (opposition) could have accepted it and sit in dialogue. “Instead, they placed an impractical formula.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday proposed forming an all-party election-time government to oversee the next general election but fell short of making it clear who will head the interim administration.

Warning that the opposing stance of the two political parties -– Awami League and BNP -– will encourage the enemies of democracy, the Communications Minister said there is still time to resolve the crisis through discussions. “I’m still hopeful that the black clouds over the sky will be removed through discussions.”
