Khaleda rejects Ashraf's informal talks claim

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia addresses a rally at Engineers Institutions premises in the capital on Tuesday.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday rejected a statement of Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam that an informal dialogue was going on with the opposition.

The opposition leader said it is a conspiracy, not discussion if there were any secret talks.

She said: “I must be informed regarding any sorts of discussion. You [govt] are secretary hatching a conspiracy, not discussion. In fact, the government wanted to make people confused by saying about a secret discussion.”

The opposition leader was addressing a rally organised by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), a student body backed by the main opposition party.

JCD organised the colorful and mammoth rally on the occasion of its 34th founding anniversary at Engineers Institutions premises in the city.

Talking to reporters at his Secretariat office on Monday, Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said the talks would start soon upon positive response from BNP. “Informal talks are taking place with opposition parties,” he said.

Khaleda said there is no scope to hold any secret discussion and everything must happen in front of people.

She categorically said, “Discussions can be held only to fix the chief adviser.”
