Khaleda meets leaders of 20-Party alliance, media to be briefed Thursday

The meeting held at her Gulshan office on Wednesday night was her first with the allies in nine months.

After the one-and-half-hour-long meeting, Kazi Zafar Ahmed, chairman of a Jatiya Party faction, told reporters the media would be briefed on the decisions of the meeting at 11am on Thursday.

“The current political situation and the next steps were mostly discussed,” he added.

The last time Khaleda went into a huddle with her allies was on Nov 22, a month after which the alliance launched an agitation demanding snap polls.

It called for a non-stop blockade of roads, rails and waterways from Jan 5 and nonstop countywide shutdowns in February.

Over 100 people had died in violence, mostly in arson on vehicles, during the agitation, which lasted until April.

Many senior BNP leaders either were arrested or went into hiding amid a government crackdown.

Alliance leaders, however, were not vocal during the agitations. Some of them did meet the BNP chief then but no official meeting was held.

In April, ahead of the city corporation elections in Dhaka and Chittagong, the BNP announced withdrawal of its blockade.

Khaleda then said fresh programmes would be announced soon after revamping her party, but no new anti-government movement has been given yet.

She held the meeting with the top alliance leaders before leaving for the UK to get medical attention for eye problems.

She has applied for visa.

About the BNP chief’s 10-day visit to London, Kazi Zafar said, “She will go for treatment. But the date for her departure hasn’t been finalised.”
