Khaleda kept ‘incommunicado’ for 5th day

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, was kept virtually incommunicado at the Gulshan office for the fifth straight day on Wednesday as telephone, cell phone, internet and satellite cable connections were not restored yet.

Police contingents in uniform and plainclothes posted at her office allowed no visitor including journalists to even go near the entrance of her office.
No party leaders were seen entering the office on Wednesday. Khaleda’s sister Selina Islam, however, entered the office at about 7:45pm.
Even the members of BNP chairperson’s media wing, who were staying at the office since January 3, did not come out of the office to talk to newsmen waiting outside round the clock as the media wing members usually did in the past days.
A staff of the office said that plainclothes police on duty asked them not to receive any visitor including journalists.
BNP chairperson’s media wing officials, Shamsuddin Dider and Sayrul Kabir Khan, who usually liaised with journalists, told New Age over phone that they were not coming out of the office fearing harassment by law enforcers.
Preferring anonymity, a police official said that they were under instructions to monitor and report minute to minute about anyone trying to visit the BNP chairperson.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Gulshan zone deputy commissioner Lutful Kabir, however, denied that there were directives from the government to impose restrictions on visitors.
