JU closed for indefinite period

The authorities closed Jahangirnagar University for an indefinite period on Saturday night over vandalism at vice-chancellor’s residence on the campus centring road accident on Dhaka-Aricha Highway that killed its two students.

The residential students were asked to vacate the dormitories by 10:00am on Sunday, said syndicate member as well as dean of Social Science Faculty M Amir Hossain.

The university authorities took the decision at an emergency syndicate meeting at VC’s house on Saturday night, he said.

Dhaka additional superintendent of police Kazi Ashraful Azim said that a case was filed against some 50 unruly students for carrying out vandalism at the residence of the VC.

‘Following the order of JU administration, police also arrested some 42 students from the spot,’ he added.

Nazmul Hasan Rana, a student of 43rd batch of Marketing department, and Arafat, a student of Microbiology department, were killed as a bus knocked them down on Dhaka-Aricha Highway around 5:00am on Friday.

Following the incident, JU students blocked the busy highway from 11:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday, demanding immediate arrest of the killer driver and bring him to justice.

At one stage, police swooped on the agitated students to disperse the gathering which triggered a clash, leaving at least 20 people including the chief security officer of JU, students and journalists.

Later, the students laid seize to the residence of VC and carried out vandalism there.

The agitated students also swooped on the teachers when they were trying to prevent them from vandalising the VC’s residence, leaving at least 10 teachers injured.

During the incident, the university authorities called in the police to bring the situation under control. Police then arrested some 42 unruly students from the spot.
