JL activist killed, 10 injured in AL-BNP clash at Araihazar

A local Awami Juba League leader was killed and 10 others were injured in a gunfight between activists of the ruling Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party at Panchmukhi at Araihazar in Narayanganj on Sunday. A tense situation was prevailing following the gunfight that killed local ttrader Amzad Hossain Molla, 30, also local leader of Awami Juba League, the ruling Awami League-backed youth organisation. Witnesses and the police said that activists of AL and BNP locked in a fierce clash centring tearing up posters of rival organisations. AL activists set fire on several houses of BNP leaders and activists in the area shortly after the news of the death spread. All types of traffic movement on Dhaka-Sylhet highway remained stopped during the clash for over an hour in the afternoon. The injured people, some of whom sustained bullet wounds, were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and some of them were admitted to different hospitals in Narsingdi. Locals said that supporters of local AL lawmaker Nazrul Islam Babu removed several festoons and posters of Araihazar BNP leader Nazrul Islam Azad, also international affairs secretary of the party’s youth front Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal. In a counter action, a group of BNP activists removed posters and festoons of the AL lawmaker from the area that led to a chase and counter chase between the activists of two arch-rival political parties. The activists of both the parties started using different types of locally-made lethal weapons as well as starting firing shots at each other leaving about ten people injured. On-duty doctors at Dhaka Medical College hospital declared Amzad Hossain dead when he was taken to the hospital. Araihazar police station officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain said that they took the situation under control shortly after they came to know about the clash. Upazila nirbahi officer Shamsul Haque said that additional contingent of law enforcers were deployed in the area.
