Jamaat, Shibir unleash violence across country over Mollah verdict

 

The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir activists went berserk at different parts of the country on Tuesday, soon after the pronouncement of the Supreme Court verdict that sentenced Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah to death.

In capital Dhaka, Jamaat-Shibir men held demonstrations, exploded crude bombs and torched vehicles in protest against the verdict.

Officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station Mashiur Rahman said some Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession protesting the SC verdict against Quader Mollah in the city’s Moghbazar area at about 2pm.

At one stage, the unruly activists set fire to a private car in the area. Police rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-Shibir activists threw two crude bombs at police from a procession at Culvert Road in Motijheel area at about 12:30 am.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Commissioner Ashrafuzzaman (Motijheel zone) said three Jamaat-Shibir men were arrested from the spot.

In Chittagong, at least 10 people, including two policemen, were injured as Jamaat-Shibir men locked in a clash with law enforcers in the port city’s Enayet Bazar area after the Quader Mollah verdict.

Two of the injured were identified as Kotwali thana sub-inspector Alim and its nayek Protap.

During the clash, the unruly activists blasted some crude bombs and vandasiled 10 vehicles parked there. Later, the Jamaat-Shibir activists set fire to a police pick-up and a private car.

In Khulna, Jamaat-Shibir men held demonstrations at different parts of the city.

Police arrested four Shibir leaders from a procession at Boyra Crossing in the city in the morning. Three crude bombs were set off in the area after the arrest.

In Natore, at least 12 people were injured in a clash between the Jamaat-Shibir men and police as the Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession protesting the SC verdict against Quader Mollah at Chakrampur in the town.

The clash broke out when police obstructed a procession brought out by the Jamaat-Shibir men protesting the SC order against Jamaat leader Quader Mollah.

The Jamaat-Shibir men threw brickbats at police, triggering a clash that left 12 people injured.

In Bogra, two policemen were injured when the Jamaat-Shibir men exploded three crude bombs near Sadar Police Station at Kabi Nazrul Islam Road in the town at about 12:45 pm.

In Sylhet, activists of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession and blocked Sunamganj-Sylhet road at Tuker Bazar in the city protesting the SC verdict against Quader Mollah.

In Laxmipur, Jamaat-Shibir men blocked Laxmipur-Dhaka highway in BSCIC Industrial area by placing logs at about 11 am, disrupting traffic for about an hour.

Police arrested Ansar Ali, secretary of Ramgati upazila unit of Chhatra Shibir on charge of planning to carry out sabotage.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, granting the government’s appeal seeking death sentence, ordered that the Jamaat leader Quader Mollah be hanged for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

The five-member Appellate Division bench pronounced the judgment at 9.35 am turning down his appeal against the judgment of the International Crimes Tribunal-2 seeking acquittal of all charges.
