Jamaat man killed in Jamaat-police clash in Jessore

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed and 12 people, including two policemen, were injured in a clash between police and Jamaat men at Joypur villaage in Monirampur upazila of Jessore district early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Anisur Rahman, 35.

Police said the clash erupted at about 5 am when police went to the village to arrest Fazlul Haque, ameer of the upazila Jamaat.

The Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked police and hurled brickbats towards them when they tried to arrest the Jamaat leader from his house.

At one stage, the law enforcers opened fire to disperse the Jamaat men, leaving Anisur dead on the spot. Twelve people, including two policemen, were injured during the clash, said police.

The injured were admitted to Monirampur upazila health complex.

Ali Azam, officer-in-charge of Monirampur thana, said police went to arrest the Jamaat ameer on charge of planning to carry subversive activities. However, he could not be arrested.
