Jamaat-e-Islami has called for a 24-hr hartal for Thursday, May 12 in protest of the hanging of war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami.

Arguably the largest fundamentalist organisation in the subcontinent, Jamaat, termed the execution of its former head as ‘murder by the government’ and called for a three-day programme protesting Nizami’s execution.

Former head of the Al Badr vigilante militia group during the 1971 Liberation War, Nizami was executed a little after Tuesday midnight.

The hartal announcement was made on the website of Jamaat-e-Islami, within a few after the news Nizami’s hanging was made.

Besides the countrywide shutdown Jamaat declared a three-day programme including a ‘gayebana janaza’ on Wednesday. The party has called for a 24 hour hartal peaceful hartal on Thursday and a special doa on Frinday.

The former Agriculture Minister during the BNP led parliament, Nizmai was hanged for war crimes including abduction, torture, murder.

Nizami had also executed the blueprint to abduct and murder the brightest minds and intellectuals during the last days of the 1971 Liberation War.

Motiur Rahman Nizami, 72 years old till his death, also headed the then Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing ‘Islami Chhatra Sangha’ during the war and went on to head the infamous vigilante group.

Together with the Razakar and Al shams, the vigilante groups like Al Badr had perpetrated widespread atrocities on unarmed civilians of Bangladesh, which amounted to war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.

The Supreme Court had removed the last legal bar before the government to hang Nizami on May 5, by rejecting his petition for a review of his death sentence.
