It’s about 10th general election, not 11th one: BNP

Accusing the government of misleading people over talks between the government and the opposition, BNP on Wednesday claimed that the party engaged in the talks to resolve the crisis over the 10th general election, not the 11th one.

In statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said, “We’ve joined the talks to discuss the election-time government ahead of the 10th parliamentary election and to push for postponing the election schedule, not to discuss the 11th general election.”

“In a bid to confuse people, the Awami League leaders and ministers said the dialogue was going on over the 11th parliamentary polls, not over the 10th one. It’s totally untrue and a blatant lie,” he added.

Fakhrul urged the government to be on the path of tolerance, compromise and peace to save the nation from a grave crisis, shunning mockery, vanity, intolerance and audacity.

He also asked the government to hand over power to a non-party neutral caretaker government without wasting further time for holding the 10th parliamentary polls in a free, fair and credible manner. “Or else, people will take the ongoing movement to the decisive level for victory to protect their voting rights.”

The BNP leader said there are no candidates in 154 seats as people have already rejected and boycotted the current schedule for the 10th election. “It’ll be considered as a stigmatised example in the country’s election history.”

Fakhrul also warned that the government will not be able to cling to power by holding an uncontested election using the state machinery and its puppet Election Commission.

Pointing at Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad, he said the drama the government has staged over a political party and its leader, has exposed its political bankruptcy.

He also alleged that though they swapped the proposals of each other in their last meeting with the ruling party delegation for a meaningful dialogue, there is no initiative insight from the government side for further talks.

Reiterating their demand for holding the 10th parliamentary election under a non-party government, Fakhrul urged the government to cancel the Jan-5 election schedule as most political parties are boycotting it. “It’s necessary to arrange the 10th general election under a non-party caretaker government through a compromise.”
