It’s a ‘no’ to govt: Fakhrul

The massive victory of the opposition-backed mayoral candidate in Gazipur City Corporation election is a clear message from the people that they have no confidence in the government, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Sunday.

“Misrule of the incumbent government has forced people to express their no-confidence in it,” Fakhrul said at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in the capital’s Nayapaltan.

Almost 48 BNP-backed candidates including mayoral aspirant MA Mannan have won in the election, which is a huge victory for the opposition, he observed.

By creating a harmony with the people of Gazipur, the opposition men succeeded to explain to them what democracy is.

“And this is what led to the overwhelming victory for the opposition-backed candidate in the city corporation elections in Gazipur, which was a stronghold of the Awami League,” he said.

About BNP’s allegations of vote rigging against the ruling party men during Saturday’s polls, the BNP leader said, “Not a single allegation was false.”

“The government had a blueprint to sweep the election. But it was the public who foiled the plot through their silent judgement,” Fakhrul said.

“The vote margin would have widened had the government not tried to rig it,” he claimed.

“It’s a no. You (government) are no more required. Now allow a non-partisan caretaker government to hold the general election and step aside,” he said.
