Inu wants Khaleda to expel war criminals from her party

Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu on Tuesday urged BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to immediately expel those accused of committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War from the opposition party and alliance.

“Those accused of committing crimes against humanity must be driven out from her (Khaleda) party and alliance,” Inu said while talking to reporters at his Secretariat office.

The minister made the remark apparently in reaction to the ICT verdict sentencing BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury to death.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Tuesday found BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury guilty of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971 and condemned him to death. This has been the first verdict against any BNP leader on war crimes charges.

Expressing satisfaction over of ICT judgment against Salauddin, Inu said it has been proved through the verdict that nobody is above law and everyone is equal in the eyes of law.

Justice has been delivered through verdict, he added.

Inu, also the president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, a component of the ruling alliance, wants the opposition leader Khaleda Zia to openly support the verdict delivered in the war crimes case against Salauddin to show respect to the rule of law.

Terming the reported leakage of copy of the verdict on different websites a ‘down-right lie’, the minister said, “(Telecom regulator) BTRC has been asked to investigate the matter.”

He hoped that the matter will be clear to them within a day o two.

The family of the war crimes convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury claimed that they had seen the verdict in the BNP leader trial on some websites before the delivery of the judgment by the tribunal, an allegation rejected by the Law Ministry.
