Conflicts between party leaders, which almost known fact, may widen during the Narayanganj City Corporation polls

After getting nodes from parties, Awami League mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy and BNP candidate Advocate Shakhawat Hossain submitted their nomination papers yesterday. Though leaders and activists of both parties said they would work for party-nominated candidates, locals hinted that both parties were suffering from intra-party conflicts. Conflicts between party leaders, which almost known fact, may widen during the Narayanganj City Corporation polls. Locals said leaders and activists of Awami League and BNP are showing their full supports to party-nominated candidates, but actually Narayanganj City Corporation polls is dividing Awami League leaders in several factions. Intra-party conflicts in Awami Legue were intensifying as Osman family was feeling that they were deprived. There had been a long-standing dispute between Shamim Osman and Ivy over city polls and these disputes would be widening in the coming days, said party insiders. Awami League mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy submitted her nomination paper yesterday with Narayanganj district Awami League unit president Abdul Hai and ex-MP Abdullah AL Kaiser while rest of top leaders, including Shamim Osman MP and Anowar Hossain, president of city AL unit were not present there. Locals said though Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of ruling Awami League had met with Narayanganj leaders over city polls and tried to solve the problems between Ivy and Shamim Osman. When contacted, district Awami League unit president Abdul Hai said party high command nominated Ivy as mayoral candidate and they would work for her. “Leaders and activists will work for Ivy and we have already started our works to elect Ivy as city mayor,” he said. Awami League candidate Ivy said: “Leaders and activists of party did not join me during nomination paper submission fearing violation electoral code of conduct. But Awami League men have already started works for me.” City AL unit president Anowar Hossain said: “We will work for boat symbol in Narayanganj city polls.” On the other hand, BNP mayoral candidate Shakhawat Hossain Khan submitted his nomination yesterday while BNP leader Taimur Alam Khandaker among others present in election commission office. Taimur Alam Khandaker said: “The BNP is a big party. There are some groups in the party but we all will work for Shakhawat Hossain to bring the victory for him.” Shakhawat Hossain said: “We are united and will win the victory altogether. I am not contesting for me, I am contesting for BNP and democracy.” Source: Dhaka Tribune
