Interpol to look for coup culprits

Interpol has been requested to assist in the arrest of non-resident businessman Ishraq Ahmed and Maj Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque for a military coup they attempted in 2011.

The army informed a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee for the Ministry of Home at the national parliament complex on Tuesday.

“A recommendation was made to ask Interpol to assist in the arrest of Ishraq Ahmed and Maj Zia for their links with the coup attempt. The army told today’s meeting that procedure to find them through Interpol was under way,” Chairman of the committee M Idris Ali told bdnews24.com.

The Army headquarters has also informed the Home Ministry.

“The measure was taken following the recommendation of the Parliamentary standing committee”, said Ali.

The army held a press conference on Jan 19, 2012 to say that they had foiled a coup attempt by a few army officers.

It said overseas businessman Ishraq Ahmed and Maj Syed Mohammad Ziaul Huq were the ones who instigated the plot.

Mosharraf Hossain, member of the parliamentary committee, told bdnews24.com, “We are still unaware of their whereabouts. We are proceeding with our search.”

The committee said that those involved with the coup must be found and given exemplary punishment.

The matter was earlier discussed in the committee’s 19th and 20th meetings held on Feb 9 and Apr 22 last year.
