Instant suspension of voting for any irregularity in next UZ polls: EC

The Election Commission has asked the returning officers to instantly suspend voting in the polling centers where any irregularity will be found during the 3rd phase election to 83 upazila parishads on March 15.

“We’ve directed the returning officers to stop instantly the voting of those polling centers that will experience any irregularity during the 3rd phase upazila elections (on March 15),” Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz told reporters at his EC Secretariat office on Thursday.

He said that in the wake of some stray incidents of violence and anomalies during the first two phases of the staggered upazila elections held last month, the Commission warned the law enforcing agencies, deputy commissioners and police supers concerned that no laxity on their part in preventing irregularities will be tolerated during the next phases of the polls.

About the absence of Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, who is now in the US on a month-long visit, Commissioner Shah Nawaz said the CEC’s absence will not create any problem for the Commission in conducting the upazila elections and its other functions.
