Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal revealed the move to bdnews24.com on Monday.

“The Police Headquarters was mulling over posting ASPs as OCs at police stations. But we have vetoed it,” he said.

A letter from the Police Headquarters to range DIGs and other officials this month was sent which ordered posting ASPs as OCs in 25 police stations in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Rangpur ranges.

The move to appoint ASPs as OCs has been in discussions for quite sometime now.

The move is aimed at making work at police stations more convenient for those who have to approach them.

However, officers of the rank of inspectors objected to the move when the system was to be implemented in model police stations two years ago.

Tejgaon OC Majharul Islam, speaking to bdnews24.com, said they had met the inspector general of police on Monday and had requested that no-one other than officers of the rank of inspectors be installed as OCs at police stations.

Another officer of the same rank, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the move is aimed at demoralising the inspector-ranking officers who have been at the very forefront of taking risks in curbing crimes.

However, an assistant commissioner from Dhaka praised the move from the Police Headquarters.

He believes that the name or infamy that the police department earns depends on the quality of service it renders.

He said the posting of ASPs as OCs would help them better engage in welfare activities of society.
