Injured in ‘police action’, BNP leader dies at DMCH

Dhaka, Mar 7 (UNB) – A BNP leader who suffered bullet wounds in police firing on Wednesday’s BNP demonstration in the city died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital later at midnight.

The deceased was identified as Shah Alam Khokan, a member of Dhaka city unit BNP.

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi informed reporters about Khokan’s death at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Thursday afternoon.

He prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Khokan along with 30 others BNP leaders and activist, including its standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, joint secretary general Amanullah Aman and Dhaka city unit member secretary Abdus Salam were injured as police opened fire on the BNP demonstration in the city’s Nayapaltan area on Wednesday afternoon.

The injured were undergoing treatment at different hospitals and clinics of the city.

Mentioning that those received bullet wounds fighting for life, Rizvi wished their early recovery.

As part of its countrywide programme, BNP arranged the demonstration in front of its Nayapaltan central office protesting the arrest of its leaders and activists and repression on them over Tuesday’s hartal enforced by the party across the country.

The trouble began as some crude bombs were exploded near Nightingale crossing around 4:30 pm while BNP vice chairman Hafizuddin Ahmed was addressing the rally.

Soon after the crude bomb blast, police started firing from the Nightingale crossing and moved towards the rally, leaving the 30 people injured.

Khokan and 13 others injured were taken to the DMCH where the Dhaka city unit BNP member died at midnight.

Meanwhile, BNP and its alliance partners observed a daylong countrywide hartal protesting the “police attacks” on the rally.
