Indian PM sends in condolences

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday conveyed his ‘profound sorrow’ at the death of President Zillur Rahman who he said was held ‘in the highest esteem by the people of India.’

In a message addressed to his counterpart Sheikh Hasina, he said President Rahman was a ‘patriot and a man of high ideals, who served his country and his people with utmost distinction over the decades.’

“His public life was marked by a spirit of sacrifice and simplicity.”

He termed President Rahman ‘an ardent advocate’ of friendly relations between India and Bangladesh.

“On this tragic occasion, we extend our deepest condolences to the people of Bangladesh.”

On behalf of the Indian government and the people of India, he prayed for peace for the departed soul and strength to his family and friends to bear this irreparable loss.

“Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration,” the condolence message read.

President Rahman died on Wednesday at a Singapore hospital after suffering from illness that ended his more than six decades of eventful political life.
