Indefinite transport strike begins in Khulna division

Transport workers went on an indefinite strike in 10 districts of Khulna division this morning protesting the jail sentence of a bus driver for a road crash that killed Tareque Masud, Mishuk Munier and three others in 2011.

The 10 districts are: Bagerhat, Chuadanga, Jessore, Jhenaidah, Khulna, Kushtia, Magura, Meherpur, Narail and Satkhira.

No long distance buses were seen on the roads since morning due to the strike, causing immense sufferings to commuters. Hundreds of passengers were found stranded at different bus stoppages of these districts.

People who came here from India through Benapole land port also got stuck as no buses had left the port city, reports our beanpole correspondent.

Loading and unloading of goods at Benapole land port came to a halt due to the strike.

Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation announced the strike at an emergency meeting at its regional committee’s office in Jessore yesterday.

On February 22, a Manikganj court sentenced bus driver Jamir Hossain to life in prison in the case filed over the accident.

Noted filmmaker Tareque Masud and media personality Ashfaque Munier Mishuk popularly known as Mishuk Munier, along with three others died in the road crash on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Joka area of Ghior upazila in Manikganj on August 13, 2011.
