Include war history in English textbooks: PM

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Thursday stressed the importance of including the great Liberation War history in English medium textbooks so that students could know about the war
pride from their childhood.
‘It’s (Liberation War history) there in Bangla medium textbooks, but it’s still to get its place with due importance in English medium or English textbooks…this should be done,’ she said.
The prime minister said this after receiving the results of PSC, Ibtedayi, JSC and JDC, and inaugurating the Book Festival at Ganabhaban, United News of Bangladesh reports.
She said the Great Liberation War is a matter of pride for all people of the country. ‘We’ve attained our victory through a war…96,000 Pakistani army personnel surrendered to us.’
The prime minister mentioned that children have to nurture in their minds that the Bangali nation is the nation of victorious. ‘Then they’ll have to grow up with self-confidence and start to love the country and work for it,’ she said.
Terming today’s children the future of the country, Hasina said proper steps will have to be taken to let them know the long struggle for the country’s independence and sacrifices made by the great sons of the soil during the Liberation War in 1971.
The prime minister said Bangladesh has become an independent country through a long struggle and supreme sacrifice of three million people, and her government’s aim was to build an educated nation and establish a poverty-free country.
She asked the authorities concerned to make sure that the history of the Liberation War is projected properly in English medium textbooks.
