Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stressed on the importance of better passenger service while officially adding two new aircraft to Biman’s hangers and relaunched the domestic flights on Sunday.

Domestic routes of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines were closed since 2011. The Dhaka-Cox’s Bazaar route was shut down last in 2011 due to aircraft crisis.

The two new 74-seater Dash-8 Q400 aircraft built in Canada was named ‘Meghdut’ and ‘Mayurakkhi’ by the PM. The PM emphasized that the flight schedules be maintained.

“The arrival and departure of planes on time will enhance the reputation of Biman Bangladesh,” said the PM in the unveiling programme.

The new domestic schedules include six flights to Cox’s Bazaar, five to Jessore, three to Rajshahi and Syedpur and two to Barisal every week.

Prime Minister mentioned that these new aircrafts and regular flight routines will meet the long cherished demand of the people living in these areas.

“Cargo shipping services are necessary to turn Biman into a profitable enterprise. It is more viable and profitable than carrying passengers and we are working on starting cargo services as soon as possible.”

Sheikh Hasina in her speech further mentioned thar Syedpur and Cox’s Bazaar airports would be turned to International Airports. Cox’s Bazaar is an important link for refueling and tourism. On the other hand, Syedpur airport will be vital for business links with Bhutan.

Further developments of the existing Shahjalal International Airport were promised by the PM.

Hasian hopes that two more Boeing 737-800s will be added to the Biman Bangladesh fleet by this year.
