ICC bans Sohag Gazi from bowling for illegal action

The governing body of world cricket ruled that the 23-year-old exceeded the 15-degree limit of arm extension in his bowling action.

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) Media Committee Chairman Jalal Yunus on Wednesday evening confirmed bdnews24.com of the ICC decision.

The ICC has also suspended Zimbabwe off-spinner Prosper Utseya with immediate effect after he was found guilty of breaking the 15-degree flex rule.

Gazi was reported for a suspect illegal action by ICC match officials in August during the tour of West Indies.

He had his bowling action tested last month at the Cardiff Metropolitan University Laboratory in England.

Gazi has played 10 Tests, 20 One-Day Internationals and nine Twenty20 Internationals for Bangladesh. He made his Test and ODI debut against West Indies in November, 2012.

Players suspended from bowling by the ICC are permitted to apply for reassessment after modifying their actions.

The ICC has been strict with identifying illegal actions in recent months and handed bans to Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal and Sri Lanka’s Sachithra Senanayake among others.

Rehabilitation

BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said that the board will support Gazi by bringing him to work on his action within the next few days.

Gazi is eligible to play domestic cricket with the board’s permission, but Chowdhury said it would be better to keep him away for now. He needed to work on his action with a Bowling Review Group (BRG), according to the official.

“We will do everything that is necessary since he is an important player,” he said.

Chowdhury also said that the board will form the BRG very soon to support Gazi for a quick return to international cricket.

“He should only come back to domestic cricket after the BRG is satisfied with his action. We will definitely give him competitive cricket before his final test.”
