Huge explosion rocks Maldah village

BORDHOMAN

Police say the bombs had been stored in that house and they went off in a repeat of the Oct 2 explosions.

“What sparked off the explosions immediately is yet to be ascertained but it was a blast with much impact. It left a three foot deep crater in the house and much of the structure collapsed,” said a West Bengal police official from the spot.

But he was not willing to be named.

CID and NIA officials have reached the spot, sparking off speculations that this could be added to the purview of the Burdwan explosions now pursued by the NIA.

The Indian government handed over the Burdwan blast probe to the NIA despite much opposition by the West Bengal government.

The NIA says it is upset with the way the state police have destroyed evidence by exploding the live bombs they recovered at Burdwan.

“But we have send our team to Baishnabnagar so that we get to collect the evidence and see whether the same group making the bombs at Burdwan was involved at Baishnabnagar,” an NIA official said, again on condition of anonymity.

The inmates of the house that collapsed at Baishnabnagar village in Maldah are absconding, giving rise to suspicion that it was a cache of bombs made and possibly smuggled into Bangladesh for use by radical elements.

“Who says Bengal does not get investments and industries. Bomb making has become an export business here,” said BJP state chief Rahul Sinha in an instant reaction.

The CPI(M) and the Congress also demanded a NIA probe into the Baishnabnagar blasts on Sunday.

No casualty was immediately reported.
