Housewife ‘killed’ for dowry in Barguna

 

A young housewife was hacked and strangulated to death allegedly by her husband and mother-in-law over dowry related conflict in Chandkhali village in Betagi upazila of Barguna district on Monday evening.

 

The victim was identified as Sharifa Khatun, 25, wife of Kamal Hossain of the village and daughter of Nur Mohammad of Harezuddin Lane in Khulna city.

 

Sharifa was a mother of two daughters — Shanta, 8, and Trisha, 5.

 

Victim’s family sources said Kamal on Monday night told his father-in-law Nur Mohammad over phone that Sharifa had committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan with a scarf.

 

On Tuesday morning, Sharifa’s body was taken to her father’s house in Khulna city by a pick-up van.

 

When the body covered with Hogla pati was unwrapped, those present at the spot got panicked seeing the dreadful body bearing numerous marks of stab injuries.

 

As the news of unnatural death got spread, a number of curious people started gathering at the spot.

 

Khulna City Corporation Mayor Moniruzzaman Moni also visited the victim’s house.

 

Terming the death of Sharifa as killing, all of them expressed resentment.

 

Later, hundreds of locals brought out a procession carrying the victim’s body in Tutpara area of the city.

 

They demanded arrest and exemplary punishment for the killers of Sharifa.
