Employees of a local cooperative society have allegedly raped a housewife in the port city’s Bakalia area after she failed to repay a default loan.

Bakalia police station Inspector (investigation) Md Shahidul Islam Chowdhury said: “The incident took place at the office of a local cooperative society named Kormojibi Somobay Somiti on Thursday night.

“The woman and her husband took a personal loan from the organisation but they failed to replay it in due time. On Thursday night, four employees of the cooperative society called the couple to their office for discussing the issue.”

“At one stage of argument, two culprits started beating the husband up while two others forcefully took the wife inside another room and violated her,” added the police official.

Later on Saturday morning, police have arrested two persons, including a lawyer, for their involvement with the gang-rape incident.

The arrestees are Nur Mohammed, 35, and Md Bahadur, 35, a local lawyer, said Bakalia police station OC Mohammed Moshin.

OC Mohsin told the Dhaka Tribune: “The duo was arrested from Chairman Ghata area on Saturday morning after the victim lodged a complaint against four persons, including the arrestees.”

The two other accused–Md Sabbir and Md Rasel–went into hiding soon after the incident, said the OC. “We are trying to capture them as soon as possible.”

The victim has been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for forensic tests, added the OC.
