Hindus demand 3-day Puja holiday

The community has also demanded 60 reserved seats in parliament

Members of the Hindu community have formed a human chain demanding a 3-day holiday for celebrating Durga Puja and getting at least 60 reserved seats in the parliament for them.

Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajot (BJHM) organised the programme in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall at Barisal city centre on Friday.

BJHM leaders of divisional, district, city and upazila units participated in the programme.

It was addressed, among others, by the leaders of BJHM, Bishwajit Ghosh Bishu and Shekhar Das Khokan.

They urged to make the country a truly secular and progressive one, and restore rights of the minority community by giving them appropriate status and shares in all spheres of the state and government affairs as per population count.

Besides, a day-long biannual conference of Puja Udjapon Parishad (PUP) Barisal city unit was also held at a community centre.

It was inaugurated by Captain (rtd) Shachin Karmakar, PUP central leader and presided over by Swapan Datta, outgoing city president of the Parishad.

The speakers and participants demanded exemplary punishment for all attackers involved in communal conflicts. They also urged all progressive forces to unite for preventing the spread of communalism.

The Parishad vowed to observe the upcoming Durga Puja festival more colourfully and set an example of communal harmony in the country.
