State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam has insisted that the Hifazat-e Islam will not be allowed to rally in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The Chittagong-based group has announced the public meeting at Motijheel, the site of its May 5 programme that had ended in widespread violence.

“We will not allow the Hifazat rally no matter what they (the Hifazat) do,” Qamrul said on Sunday at a programme of the ruling Awami League in Dhaka.

“They want to create disorder in the guise of a rally,” he said, justifying the refusal of permission to the Islamist group.

He, however, feared the group can try to hold their rally even if they do not get police permission.

A platform of readymade garment workers had announced a rally at Motijheel on Tuesday after the Hifazat called for its Dec 24 rally. Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan is the convenor of the workers’ platform.

Widely believed to be funded by the Jamaat-e-Islami, the Hifazat had held a rally at Motijheel on May 5 this year. The rally resulted in widespread violence in which several people had died and government and private establishments were damaged.

Activists of the Hifazat-e Islam had allegedly burned hundreds of copies of the Quran during their mayhem.

Law-enforcing agencies had evicted them in a late night raid after Hifazat had announced an indefinite sit-in.

“The BNP, Jamaat, Islami Chhatra Shibir (Jamaat’s student front) and the Hifazat are not different entities,” claimed the junior law minister.

“They (BNP and Jamaat) want to let loose another spell of unrest using the Hifazat’s rally,” he alleged.

The Hifazat had enjoyed support from the Opposition during its May 5 Dhaka rally.

“The BNP, Jamaat and Hifazat combine beware, for you’re playing with fire.

“We have to wage another war against them,” said Qamrul.
