Speaking at a programme in the capital on Thursday, the former military ruler said, “We are Muslims, it is our religion. It is Allah’s favourite religion. You have seen what happens when you offend this religion.”

“When the Constitution was amended, I asked Awami League leaders – why did you leave out ‘the faith in Allah?’ They answered Islam remains the state religion, do you know what it took to do this much?”

“I feel helpless! What has happened to the country! Where have we gone! Who will bring the country out of this? You have to take this responsibility.”

He was speaking while distributing certificates among students at a madrasa for girls.

Ershad said the government was late in taking actions against ‘atheist’ bloggers. “I said so many times, punish them, otherwise you will be in trouble. Then they did not listen to me.”

“Nothing good comes from playing around with religion. There is nothing bigger than Allah’s grace. I seek his blessings that protect our country, protect us, the people. Inshallah, he will bless us.”

Ershad advised the government to learn lessons from the losses in the city corporation elections.
