Hefazat-e-Islam on Friday accused the government of playing double standard over their Saturday’s long march programme.

Addressing a press briefing at Lalbagh Madrasah in the city, Maulana Junaid Babunagari, secretary general of the organisation, also alleged that the participants of the long march were obstructed by police and ruling party men in Chittagong, Sylhet, Khulna, Feni, Comilla and other places on their way to the capital.

The Islamic organisation held the press briefing in the afternoon to convey their protest against the obstructions.

“Thousands of participants remain stranded at different points of the country due to the obstructions. On one hand, the government has allowed the long march to be held and is creating obstacles to its participation on the other. Bus drivers are being threatened. The government is behaving like Monafiq (hypocrite) by resorting to double standard,” said Maulana Junaid.

The Hefazat leader said those who failed to come to the capital to attend the programme will stay in their respective places till the further instruction comes from the organiaation’s high command.

Speaking on the occasion, long march coordination committee convenor Nur Hossain Kasemi warned that they will announce tougher programmes if the obstructions are not removed immediately.

The press conference was told that Bangladesh Chhatra League workers ransacked a bus carrying Hefazat workers and beat them up at Baroiarhat in Chittagong.

Besides, about 50 buses carrying Hefazat workers were obstructed at Maowa and Daulatdia ferry ghats. Police dispersed a procession of Hefazat workers in Feni. Several buses carrying Hefazat men were obstructed in Jamalpur, Satkhira and Narsingdi districts, the press conference was informed.

Hefazat leaders Mufti Wakkas, Anwar Shah, Abdur Rakib, Jafrullah Khan and Abdul Jabbar were, among others, present at the press conference.

Hefazat is set to hold its Dhaka rally on Saturday.
