HC to hear Sunday BNP petitions over harassment

The High Court on Thursday fixed January 19 for hearing on the writ petitions filed Wednesday seeking to refrain police from harassing top five BNP leaders, including Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, without due process of law.

The two other leaders are BNP chairperson’s special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and Sardar Sakhawat Hossain Bakul.

An HC division bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice M Habibul Gani fixed the date as additional attorney general Murad Reza prayed for time.

On the night of November 8 last year, plainclothes police arrested BNP standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah from the city’s Karwanbazar area as they came out of Sonargaon Hotel.

On the following day, Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas was arrested from in front of BNP chairperson’s Gulshan residence.
