HC summons Mirpur DC, OC over rape of RMG worker

Justices Farah Mahbub and Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo gave the order after hearing a writ petition on Wednesday.

Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Imtiaz Ahmed and Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Salauhuddin will have to be present in court on Jul 15.

The judges scheduled the submission of the victim’s medical report on that day and ordered the duty official of DMCH’s One Stop Crisis Centre to be present in court.

The garment worker on Jul 1 was heading to her home in Pikeparha from a friend’s house at 10pm.

“Two men dragged her into a microbus at Technical Mor and raped her. They dropped her at that very place at dawn,” police told bdnews24.com.

The victim was able to identify one of her attackers as ‘Farid’, police said.

The petition, filed on behalf of a charity organisation on Jul 5, attaches news reports of the incident.

The bench on Wednesday issued a rule asking why administration’s inaction in arresting the rapists should not be termed illegal.

The judges also asked why relevant authorities should not be ordered to form a regulation that would ensure safety of women on the streets.

The defendants were asked to give reply to the rule in two weeks.
