HC rule on communal attacks

HC

Justices Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and ABM Altaf Hossain gave the suo moto order on Wednesday.

Tangail, Bogra, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Chandpur and Natore witnessed hate attacks against the Hindus after the Jan 5 polls.

The court ordered the deputy commissioners and police superintendants of these districts to submit reports, within the next week, about measures taken to handle communal strife.

The judges also issued a rule asking why an order should not be given to ensure security and compensation for victims.

They also asked why measures should not be taken to stop such attacks effectively.

The rule wants the home secretary, IG of Police, Director General of RAB and the Deputy Commissioners (DC) and Superintendants of Police (SPs) of the 7 districts to come up with explanations within two weeks.

The order comes following submission of two reports on Jan 13 published in national dailies ‘Amader Shomoy’ and ‘Prothom Alo’.
Lawyer Parimal Chandra Guha presented the reports to the Court.

Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy told bdnews24.com: “The minorities are attacked just like it happened after the 2001 election. This would not have repeated if those involved in the attacks then would have been brought to justice.”

Replying a query from the press, he said that the issue of not trying the 2001-attacks would come up in the hearing of the HC rule.
