HC removes bar; Hajj pilgrims can travel by airlines of choice

Hajj

The High Court, upon a public interest litigation writ petition, on Monday passed an interim order allowing Hajj pilgrims to fly to Saudi Arabia by airlines of their choice.

Passing the interim order, an HC division bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why its decision making it mandatory for pilgrims to perform Hajj by Biman Bangladesh and Saudi Airlines should not be declared illegal.

On April 24 this year, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism decided to carry Hajj pilgrims only by Biman Bangladesh and Saudi Airlines, and by no other carrier.

Abdul Kabir Khan, vice–president of Hajj Agencies Association of Bangladesh (HAAB) filed the public interest litigation writ petition challenging the validity of the impugned government decision.

Barrister Mahbub Shafique and KM Hafizul Alam appeared for the PIL writ petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman stood for the government.
