The High Court on Sunday set September 26 for rule hearing over holding a dialogue between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also president of Awami League, and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, also the leader of opposition in parliament, to resolve the political impasse over the upcoming general election.

On March 27, responding to a public interest litigation writ petition filed by a lawyer, an HC division bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed issued the rule in this regard.

Issuing the rule, returnable in four weeks, the HC asked the chiefs of the two parties as to why a direction should not be given to hold political dialogue between them and their alliance in and outside parliament to resolve the deadlock over the next general election.

The HC also asked the Home Secretary to explain why he should not be directed to take measures to stop ‘the illegal activities like hurling bombs and cocktails, damaging and setting vehicles on fire, and other activities done in the name of enforcement of political rights and activities.’

The HC, among others, made Sheikh Hasina, Khaleda Zia and Home Secretary as respondents to the rule.
